Spectacular bankruptcy after the World Cup? "We have stopped all payments"

The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Trondheim, held from February 26 to March 9, resulted in a huge loss and turned out to be a financial failure, the organizers announced on Thursday, suspending all payments to subcontractors and suppliers, including food suppliers.
The 2011 World Championships in Oslo brought the organizers about eight million euros in profit and the company "Trondheim 2025 AS" was counting on at least two million, but now - as the media commented - it may end in spectacular bankruptcy.

- According to initial calculations, the losses are huge and continue to grow as we continue to count them, so we have decided to suspend all payments until their final amount is determined - said Age Skinstad, director of the World Cup.
The reason - as he explained - was mainly the changing unfavourable, rainy weather, which resulted in lower than expected ticket sales. According to the media, it was rather the effect of an overactive imagination and excessive ambition.
The organizers were counting on a gigantic festival and asked the owners of catering stands to prepare for 300 thousand people, which ended up being a huge financial loss for them and huge amounts of food thrown away, because less than 2/3 of the expected audience showed up. Many local farmers have not yet been paid even for providing wood for bonfires.
One of them, Kristian Toldnes Holm, told the daily "VG" that he had sent bills with reminders but had received no response – "no one answers the letters or phone calls and it looks like the company no longer exists."
Hundreds of subcontractors found themselves in a similar situation, which - as the media stated - "already reeks of bankruptcy and another scandal after the manipulation of ski jumpers' suits in Trondheim".
Tove Moe Dyrhaug, president of the Norwegian ski federation, which holds a 60 percent stake in Trondheim 2025 AS, said on Thursday that "this unfortunate case once again puts us in a very unfavourable light abroad and the consequences will be long-lasting."
